A friend asked me to check his wireless router setup.  Its the first one he ever setup and he wasn't sure if he did it correctly.  So I went over sat at his dining table with him and his wife watching over my shoulders as I opened my laptop.  First thing I did was right mouse clicked on my wireless icon and selected View Available Wireless Networks (I have Windows XP).  There were a few wireless networks within radio range of my computer; some secured and some not.  Right off the bat I knew which was their network because the named their network kimosnetwork.  I selected their network and selected Connect.  At this point they did not seem concerned.  In fact they seemed happy I was able to connect easily.

Then I started the lesson of securing their wireless network.  Once I was connected I started browsing the internet and told them imagine if I was a stranger parked in a car just outside your house. And instead of going to msn.com, yahoo.com or some safe website, I went to sites that posted child pornography or other illegal material.  Some stranger in on your computer network doing illegal activity.  I told them that if law enforcement detected this illegal activity, they Kimo and his wife that will be targeted and not the stranger in the car.

To continue on that line, I looked at my network places and found an open shared folder on their laptop which was also on.  I put in the folder some photos and some files, and reminided them that I'm the stranger using your internet and I just deposited onto their computer some pornographic files and a virus and some spyware software so I can track their activities.  At this point they became very concerned.

Finally, I showed them how easily I went into their router's configuration because they didn't change the password to the router.  At this point I start explaining to that I am now (still the stranger) configuring the router so I have greater access to laptop.  By now they've seen enough and pleaded that I fix the issue.  Which I did
